Bread Bonda (Step - by - Step)
This is my favorite afternoon snack when I was growing up as a kid. And i love when my mom makes it. This is the recipe that comes right from my mom's kitchen and will be a perfect afternoon snack for your kiddos. I have used less spices keeping kids in mind and also these taste good when moderately spiced and can be served with some hot chili garlic sauce to add some zest...
Ingredients:
Boiled Potatoes - 4
Peas - 1/3 cup ( frozen)
Mint leaves - 1 Tbsp
onion - 1 medium
green chili - 1 or 2 (optional)
salt - 1 tsp
black pepper - 1/2 tsp
coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
turmeric powder - 1 tsp
oil - 1 tbsp
Bread Slices - 8 to 10
Method:
Potato Stuffing:
Heat 1 Tbsp oil in non stick pan. Once it is hot add the chopped onions and green chilies. Add turmeric powder. Once the Onions are saute well add salt and black pepper. Grate (or mash) the boiled potatoes and add to the pan. Microwave the peas for 1 min on high. Add the peas to the pan. Add coriander powder and mix everything well and finally add the chopped mint leaves. Now that makes our stuffing ready, switch off the heat and let it cool.
Usually I don't make deep fried snacks for two reasons, first being you need patience to deep fry them until they get the perfect texture and color, second, I am addicted to those which loads the fat quickly into my body. Once I make these, can't resist and will keep on eating them, i think sometimes it's okay to indulge when you make these once a year. :-)
Tips:
Take care and Enjoy the Day!

Bread Bonda |
As my kids are home most of the time in their summer holidays, I am making sure some afternoon snacks are there at home to fill their tired bodies. And this is the best snack to fill them up and they can eat like finger food without loosing their turn in the play and sure will win your kids heart. You can do some variations with the stuffing, you can add some sweet corn instead of peas and replace mint leaves with baby spinach. I have fresh mint handy in my garden so couldn't resits to add this. That added a lot of flavor to these bread bonda. If you are not a fan of mint leaves, you can totally avoid it and still your bread bonda will be perfect. Here is the recipe and Enjoy!
Ingredients:
Boiled Potatoes - 4
Peas - 1/3 cup ( frozen)
Mint leaves - 1 Tbsp
onion - 1 medium
green chili - 1 or 2 (optional)
salt - 1 tsp
black pepper - 1/2 tsp
coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
turmeric powder - 1 tsp
oil - 1 tbsp
Bread Slices - 8 to 10
Method:
Potato Stuffing:
Heat 1 Tbsp oil in non stick pan. Once it is hot add the chopped onions and green chilies. Add turmeric powder. Once the Onions are saute well add salt and black pepper. Grate (or mash) the boiled potatoes and add to the pan. Microwave the peas for 1 min on high. Add the peas to the pan. Add coriander powder and mix everything well and finally add the chopped mint leaves. Now that makes our stuffing ready, switch off the heat and let it cool.
Potato Stuffing |
Once the stuffing cool, take handful amount in your palm and roll it like small ball.
Trim the edges of the bread slices. Take water (very little, should be at the bottom) in a small wide bowl, dip the bread slice in water and quickly squeeze it.
Place the potato ball in the middle of the bread and cover and make it like a ball.
Repeat this process until all the potato balls are covered with bread.
Heat the oil for deep frying and fry these ball until golden color.
Serve them with Hot Chili Sauce.
Take a close peek at all flavors inside. |
Tips:
- Making the bread wet is the critical and tricky part in this recipe. It should be just wet, not too watery and not too dry. Make sure it is not wet too much, otherwise it can burst when you put it in the oil. so be careful.
- The tip i follow is use wide bowl and take very small amount of water as long as the bread dips in it that's fine. it is better to use wide plate, if this is your first time.
Take care and Enjoy the Day!

ReplyDeleteThat would be interesting alternative! I have never tried, please give it a try and let me know how you liked it! But the fried Bread on top is the tasty part in this dish, not sure if you get the same taste in baked version.
