Gongura Dal

As there is Plenty of Gongura ( Red Sorrel Leaves) in my garden, I have been trying several varieties with Gongura. Today I have made simple Dal ( Pappu) with Gongura, it turned out to be delicious. Here is the Recipe, Njoy!

Gongura Dal
Gongura / Red Sorrel Leaves - 2 cups
Dal - 1 cup
Onion - 1 medium
Green Chili - 2
Curry Leaves - 6 to 7
salt - 1 tsp
Sambar powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Tempering Ingredients

Preparatory Steps:
  • First wash Dal, add 2 cups of water for 1 cup of Dal,  in a medium bowl. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric to the bowl and Keep it aside for 15 min. Then pressure cook the Dal for 3 whistles until Dal is cooked completely. Take it out of the pressure cooker and mash Dal until it becomes very soft.
  • Remove Gongura from Stems, Wash under Lukewarm water and Chop roughly into small pieces. Keep it aside
  1. Heat nonstick pot and add Oil to it. Once the Oil is hot, add red chili, followed by Chana Dal, Urad Dal, Cumin Seed and Mustards. As Mustard starts spluttering, add Curry Leaves and Turmeric Powder.
  2. Once the tempering is done add Chopped Green Chili and Onions slices. Saute for 3 min.
  3. Add chopped Gongura Leaves to the Pot and mix with Tempering and Onions. Close the Lid let the Gongura wilt completely that allows it to come together.
  4. Add mashed Dal to the Pot, mix it well with Gongura. Add salt, Sambar powder to the Dal and mix well, simmer for few minutes with Lid Open. Now taste and adjust any seasonings.
  5. Gongura Dal is ready, Serve Hot with White Rice, It tastes super sour , slurpy and Delicious.

  • You can pressure cook Gongura along with Pappu as well, but that doesn't keep the Green Color on Gongura in this Pappu. It is good to use LeafyGreens, directly to get all the nutrient benefits in your meal.
  • If you don't have the Sambar Powder you can add 1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder + 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder.
  • I haven't used any tamarind in this Dal, as my Red Sorrel leaves are super sour. If yours are not, then please add 1/2 tsp of Tamarind Paste when you taste and adjust seasonings.
  • Adding Turmeric to Dal while pressure cooking, allows Dal to cook completely and it gives nice color to Dal.
Take care until we meet here again,
