Marvelous Marble Idli

After observing  my cooking experiments with very odd combinations (since 2 months), our wonderful nanny thought I can do some good to their unnoticed abundant Red Cabbage. Usually I have tried cooking red cabbage as curry with tomato, but that didn't fly much at our house. As my hubby is so reluctant to eat cabbage or cauliflower  I always try to sneak those in some how (Glad, kids did n't adapt this from him ;-)). I love cauliflower and don't complain about cabbage. Usually I sneak cabbage in fried rice, noodles, veg manchurian, stuffed bell pepper, pav bhaji etc.

But now I am here with huge head of red cabbage, what should i do with it now? As I have come across with Twist Traditional Idli event, I wanted to do something different with my routine Idli. Then I got this idea to make the Traditional Idli Marvelous with these Marble effects. Check it out how I have sneaked in the red cabbage here. ;-) (I am Exploring more recipes with Red Cabbage, keep checking for those. :-))

Ingredients:
Idli Batter - enough for 16 idlis ( one batch)
Red Cababge - 1/2 cup chopped.
Grated Carrot - 1/2 cup

Preparation:
1. Do your Idli batter as your routine procedure.
2. Saute the Red cabbage in the non stick pan for 2 min. Take it out and let it cool for 1 min.
3. In the Idli stand place one small scoop in the mold, then add the add some red cabbage on one side. and then add grated carrots on one side (if the mold is in circle shape, add cabbage in semi circle shape and carrot in other semi circle shape), and then place one more scoop on top of the veggies.
4. Repeat this until all the batter is done.
5. Steam in Idli in pressure cooker for 7 min.
6. Once it is cool and take the Idli out, and check out those colorful marble effects on your Idli.

Why not let the love flow in the month of love. Yes, I am fully using my cookie cutters ;-)

Serving Tip:
Serve the Idli hot with Red Pepper Chutney.

Hint:
You can use any store bought Idli batter or use the ready made Idli Mix ( like GITS)

This is going to Twist your Traditional Idli event by Satya.

Take care until next time

  1. Hi Mythreyi,
Red Cabbage is new to me. I had thought that the red is from beet root. Idlis look fab! I love the heart shaped ones lot more than the traditional round ones.

  2. Yes Archana, I didn't see red cabbage in India. Red cabbage is little hard and strong flavor than green cabbage.
Here (Texas,USA) some times I have seen Green Cauliflowers also. Never tried them though. on my list to try.
