Dosakaya Royyalu ~ Shrimp Dosakaya Curry

I heard from some of my friends several times about Royyalu ( Shrimp / Prawn) and Dosakaya combination. I always wanted to try that combination. Usually I don't make shrimp because of it's smell. But recently my son developed interest for Shrimp, so I am trying several shrimp varieties these days. That makes Vj happy too who is ardent lover of Shrimp! :-) In this curry Shrimp is coated with Masala and gets simmered with Dosakaya which gives slight sourness to this curry making spices to settle and enhancing the flavor of Shrimp. Here is the recipe, Njoy!

Ingredients:
Shrimp - 20 count (Tail Off and Semi Cooked)
Salt - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp

Dosakaya - 1 small
Onion - 1/2 onion
Green Chili - 2
Oil - 2 Tbsp
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp
Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
Coriander / Cilantro - for Garnish

Preparatory Steps:

  • Wash Shrimp under lukewarm water; drain and take them in a bowl. Add salt and turmeric powder and coat shrimp well.
  • Now boil the shrimp on low to medium heat until all the water from the Shrimp evaporates making the shrimp to become smaller and wilted. It takes at least 15 min.
  • Peel Dosakaya and de seed, and chop into small cubes.

Method:

  1. Heat the non-stick pan and add oil to it. Once the oil is hot add cumin seeds.
  2. Add chopped onion and green chili to the pan and mix it well with oil and saute for 2 min. Add Ginger garlic paste to the pan and mix with onions and green chili. Close the lid and simmer for 2 more minutes.
  3. Now add cooked Shrimp to the onion mix, give it a stir so that Shrimp is mixed with onions. Close the lid and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Add chopped Dosakaya cubes to pan. Mix with Shrimp and Onion mix. Add salt, coriander powder, red chili powder and mix spices well with shrimp.
  5. Add 1 cup of water to the pan and close the lid and simmer on slow to medium heat for 10 min.
  6. After 10 min, taste and adjust the seasonings, add Garam Masala as needed.
  7. Mix everything well and Switch off the Stove, Transfer to Serving Bowl and Garnish with Cilantro.

Notes:

  • It tastes grate with White Rice.
  • If the curry becomes too spicy, you can add 1 tsp lime juice at the end to curry.
  • Some people leave seeds in Dosakaya as it gives some more sour taste to curry. It's your choice to use seeds or not. I don't use seeds as they are uncomfortable under teeth.
